Back in 2012 I founded Serosensa Limited - a little design agency in a shared office in Nottingham city centre using my iMac from home, with my previous employer agreeing to become my first client. I asked around all of my contacts and friends and managed to sign another 4 smaller clients on monthly retainers and I began to believe this could actually work. Since then Serosensa has grown and flourished, now attracting a vast range of clients with HS2, Eddie Hall, Nestlé, Galliford Try, Carlsberg, Morgan Sindall, Top Trumps, Keltbray, Pretty Green, Monopoly & YMCA all in the portfolio.
Fourteen years on, Serosensa is still here - and award-winning. In 2020 our When I Grow Up children's book won a Platinum MUSE Creative Award, one of four awards for that project.
As a bedrock principle, Serosensa has never compromised on quality - "That'll do" just isn't in our vocabulary - and so as bigger challenges came through the door, so did bigger budgets. Standards continued to grow and grow, and we realised it was no longer financially viable to produce websites for smaller businesses without abandoning our thoroughness - so we started turning the little guys away. We didn't like that. Even though it made sense, we didn't like that one bit!
It took me years to learn that Serosensa's success wasn't just about the quality of the work - it was actually that we were an everyman company that people could relate to and feel part of. Every one of us could talk to any kind of client. Our work was incredibly professional, but our communication was the exact opposite! Getting the kettle on was always way more important than the 'strong handshake' everyone banged on about. Clients felt like friends and those trusting, bonded relationships were actually the key to Serosensa's success. We understood our clients better than most. Drifting more into a corporate culture for the money wasn't what I wanted for Serosensa and I had forgotten about the joy of starting a business. I wanted to reattach myself to that excitement. I wanted to find a way to never turn away a startup again.
Getting a new business off the ground and building a reputation is usually the hardest part - often because most new businesses don't have the money to make a big impression. We wanted to do something about that.
Whilst building bespoke websites at Serosensa for established clients - starting at £5,000 - we suddenly saw an opportunity to help new businesses with very modest budgets (instead of turning them away) and we saw a financially viable way to do it!
Generally people needing their first website pay a small fee to an automated website builder, pick a boxy template, then have to - without any experience in layout or user experience - build it all themselves! This typically doesn't make a great impression, but the new business has a website, and it's theirs!
We have put our years of web design experience and a boatload of time and consideration into making a selection of modules which comprise all our websites. Yep! All of them! ...and they've got everything you'll need! It has a clean, modern, modular design so we can stack your pages however you like.
We've developed each module to within an inch of its life and continue to develop new ones. Every PixelClub website runs on the same platform and code. This means every hour we spend working on the website, we've also spent working on yours - and it saves everyone a fortune!
PixelClub doesn't start from scratch each time. We designed one 'mothership' website with carefully considered modular parts that work for nearly every business, and every client's website is built from them.
Early on, some people saw that as recycling. But that was exactly the point - and once they saw how unlikely it is that their customers would ever land on another PixelClub website, and how it puts a properly designed website within reach, they were on board.
It's modular - every site shares one platform, which is exactly why it costs what it does. Your logo, colours, images, words and choice of modules still make your website your own.
From day one, PixelClub was designed to be highly adaptable. Every single PixelClub webpage is a clean stack of different modules, and since we develop modules all the time, our customers are always getting a product that is constantly improving. In the early days customers would wish for certain features and we'd create them, and then launch the new modules to everyone. Nowadays everyone is very much catered for, but if your business needs something our modules don't cover, let us know. If other members could use it too, we build it for everyone at no extra cost; anything specific to you is quoted separately.
To give customers a striking, high quality, reliable, affordable website, live in about a week.
That's how PixelClub came to be - want to see everything a website with us actually includes?
